A two minute walk from your Hanover Bay apartment is the WA Museum, where long-term collections, such as the Lighthouse Exhibition, are displayed.

The centerpiece is the Eclipse Island Optic, consisting of three glass lenses, each three metres high. The optic rotates silently on its bed of mercury and lights up the building. A must see.

For great food and coffee I can recommend the Vancouver Cafe.

I sampled a slice of their home made Honey Quince & Walnut with Salted Honeyed Walnuts cake. Absolutely scrumptious!!

And it was further enhanced with a mug of barista grade coffee.

The Vancouver Cafe is a short walk (NW direction) from Hanover Bay Apartments, and is open seven days a week.

Definitely worth a visit.

Albany in Winter "Yes"

7 Jun 2016 9:47 AM - Fleggletaub

“It is always cold and raining in Albany” ... so sang our grandmothers over & over again, until it became the myth that is still echoed today.

During winter, Albany’s temperature is similar to Perth. And as well as some rain (many times at night for some reason) there are also some incredibly blue-sky days.

So what does Albany offer in winter?

  • Pure fresh air that started its life in the Antarctic. It feels great!
  • Clarity of light – great if you are an artist or photographer
  • Whale watching
  • Fishing
  • Cafes, restaurants & wineries – some with large open fires to welcome you to a restful afternoon.

Albany in winter invites you to slow down and relish the many interesting sites found in this  “Paris of the South”. More than that, it assures you of an experience in holiday making that brings you back time & time again to enjoy yourself.

Whale Season in Albany

7 Jun 2016 10:00 AM - www.amazingalbany.com.au

Whales have begun arriving along Albany’s coast on their long annual migration from the Antarctic to warmer northern waters, heralding the start of whale-watching season.

Western Australia has one of the longest whale-watching seasons in the world and Albany’s sheltered harbours are a prolific breeding ground where visitors can experience the thrill of seeing these majestic ocean giants.

Humpback, southern right and the rare blue whales visit Albany’s waters during winter where they frolic, mate and calve.

Some of the best spots to catch sight of whales from shore includes the Ellen Cove Boardwalk, Discovery Bay, Marine Drive lookouts, Cheyne Beach, Camp Quaranup, Gull Rock, Bald Head and Middleton Beach.

Visitors to enjoy spectacular views
at new lookout near Albany

Visitors can now enjoy spectacular lookouts, walkway and picnic area at the newly opened The Gap and Natural Bridge in Torndirrup National Park, near Albany.

Opened in time for the April school holidays, the $6.1 million facilities upgrade has been made possible by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program and the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Environment Minister Albert Jacob and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman announced the opening of the spectacular new tourism facility over the weekend.

"Visitors can experience the dramatic coastline and spectacular scenery out to West Cape Howe from a grated see-through platform that rises almost 40 metres above the ocean and extends 10m out from the cliff face, of which four metres is directly above the ocean.” Mr Jacob said.

Catrin Allsop, A/CEO of Australia’s South West said The Gap and Natural Bridge are a must-see for tourists in the Albany area and is a great addition for our ongoing marketing of the Great Southern.

“This stunning upgrade adds to the wealth of fantastic tourism experiences for visitors to the region including the Granite Skywalk in Porongurup National Park, the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk in Walpole-Nornalup National Park, the Discovery Bay Tourism Experience in Frenchman Bay and the National Anzac Centre in Albany.”

Calling all Foodies

4 Apr 2016 2:28 PM - Fleggletaub

A not to be missed eating establishment is Cosy Corner Cafe at Torbay, half way between Albany and Denmark along the Lower Denmark Road.

This Gold Plate Award winning restaurant cooks with local produce wherever possible, while fresh salad vegetables and herbs are “home grown” or locally sourced. A local biodynamic farm supplies free-range eggs, lamb and beef; chickens are Mount Barker Free Range.

As if this is not enough, dressings and sauces are made in-house, with syrups and coulis being made from real fruit.

All rather special.

My wife and I recently enjoyed a superb morning tea at Cosy Corner Cafe. We chose a French almond friend served with passionfruit coulis, and a slice of rhubarb and apple spice cake served with a summer strawberry compote – both absolutely delicious, as was the coffee (beans roasted locally by Naked Bean).

We will be back!
